Remote education provision: Information for parents – September 2024

This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to pupils and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education where pupils are required to remain at home.

High quality teaching and learning are at the heart of Woodfield’s Home-learning experience that will enable all our pupils to continue to make progress through the curriculum so that, on return to school, subject curriculums can resume as smoothly as possible. Home-learning at Woodfield will, therefore, be a blended approach. Work provided to our pupils could be a combination of on-line work, set through access to the pupils own online school resource log ins or paper resources, made available for collection or if necessary, delivered home.

The remote curriculum: What is taught to pupils at home

A pupil’s first day or two of being educated remotely might look different from our standard approach, while we take all necessary actions to prepare for a longer period of remote teaching. We will communicate with you to establish the resources and details required to enable home learning. This will include identifying the online resources you will need and the resources we are able to provide you with.

What should my child expect from immediate remote education?

In the immediate instance your child can access all their online accounts. Your child’s log in details will be available in their planner and include access to sites that support English, Maths and phonics. The website includes details of subjects and homework style projects that pupils can work on.

Teachers will be made aware of the need to provide home-learning resources for your child and a pack of resources / worksheets will be collated and made available to you, for collection from the school office. This pack will contain resources that support your child to continue with the planned curriculums carried out in school so that on the day that they return they will transition back to lessons easily.

If you need these resources posted to you, please contact the office, and make us aware (01527) 527081, and we will arrange to do this promptly.

Following the first few days of home education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?

  • We will deliver curriculum resources that link to what we do in school.
  • Some resources may need to have alternatives or adaptations in some subjects. For example, a food practical lesson might include theoretical resources on a similar topic or theme might be provided to support curriculum coverage, rather than the practical so that it is straightforward for parents / carers to implement or supervise learning activities.
  • It is not always possible to provide and identical home-learning package, to that which we teach in school due the specialist or technical nature of the terms or processes.
  • Any differences to the school curriculum will be made to support the pupil to engage with the best learning experience. The pupil needs and ability will be the driving force behind decisions made.
  • Any work completed can be returned to school on completion.
  •

Remote teaching and study each day

How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

We will work with parents/ carers and pupils regarding the expected and required amount of time that should be spent on learning activities, as this may vary from case to case.

  • Official start of the compulsory school day – 8.45am
  • Official end time of the compulsory school day – 3.15pm

Accessing remote learning

How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

Pupils will have access to the following online resources for their home-learning. Log ins are allocated to pupil and can be found in their school planners. If you need any further information – contact the school office.

  • Language Angels for MFL
  • MyMaths and TTRS (Times Tables Rock Stars) for Maths
  • org for Computing
  • Lexia for early reading and English
  • 2D Design for DT

If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. We take the following approaches to support those pupils to access remote education.

  • We may be able to offer you a laptop – please contact the school office for details of how to request one.
  • We may be able to issue or lend devices that enable an internet connection – please contact the school office for details of how to request one.
  • Pupils can access printed materials – a pack of resources / worksheets will be collated and made available to you, for collection from the school office. This pack will contain resources that support your child to continue with the planned curriculums carried out in school.

How will my child be taught remotely?

We use a combination of the following approaches to teach pupils remotely.

  • Access to recorded teaching, e.g. Oak Academy lessons, video / audio recordings made by teachers.
  • Printed paper packs produced by teachers (e.g. workbooks, worksheets)
  • Textbooks and reading books pupils have at home.
  • Commercially available websites supporting the teaching of specific subjects or areas, including video clips or sequences.
  • Long-term project work and / or internet research activities.

Engagement and feedback

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

  • We expect your child to engage in the learning activities provided.
  • We expect your child to consider their school timetable and attempt to complete activities like that on their timetable, to keep their subject routine and access going.
  • We expect your child to be engaged in learning during the school day hour as set out above.
  • We hope that parents will support and enable their child to engage with a continued and set learning routine at home, to help the pupil to continue to access some learning whilst at home.

How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed?

  • We will make contact by phone or email weekly to gain feedback on your progress through the learning activities provided.
  • We will work with parents / carers to support pupil engagement and access to learning activities.
  • We will review the amount / content and progression through learning activities and respond to your feedback if work needs to be adjusted.
  • We will deliver or make packs of alternatives available if the feedback suggests that there is a concern will be engaging with the remote work provided.
  • Parents can contact the school office at any time to request support / resources.

How will you assess my child’s work and progress?

Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual children. For example, quizzes marked automatically or via digital platforms are also valid and effective methods. Pupil log ins and accounts are personal to them and can be reviewed by teaching staff who then review progress and set new assignments.  Our approach to feeding back on pupil work is as follows;

  • Teachers will review your child’s access to online work. They will evaluate progress made and set new and ongoing assignments based of progress so far.
  • Parents can return completed worksheets / books / project work to school – teachers will review progress through these activities and set new tasks as appropriate.
  • Your child’s teacher will communicate with you weekly via a call or email to get feedback and evaluate progress through activities.

Additional support for pupils with particular needs

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) may not be able to access remote education / home-learning support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents / carers to support those pupils in the following ways;

  • We will communicate closely and regularly with parents / carers to establish what is reasonably practicable for families and pupils to engage in.
  • We will signpost families to any appropriate additional support that could be offered from outside agencies / the community.
  • We will review family and social situations to ensure that provision is a positive experience for all involved and does not cause undue stress to the pupil and family.
  • We will provide an appropriately selected and agreed range of activities – in close liaison with parents. These activities can be any combination of the activities listed in this document above.
