The Purpose of our Careers Curriculum?

We want our pupils to experience a careers curriculum that establishes a growing knowledge and awareness of the world of work and what they, as young people, can aim for as they prepare for transition to high-school but also adulthood. This includes delivering a breadth of opportunities and experiences so that our pupils have a foundation to build their own future pathways on. As with many young people, knowing what career you want to do as an adult can seem like an impossible decision to make. We aim to equip our pupils with the foundational knowledge to make this decision less daunting by widening their understanding of what careers are out their for them.

Intent:

What will our pupils experience throughout their careers curriculum at Woodfield Academy?
Access to careers learning from Year 7 onwards – learning that is linked through their curriculum provision and also explicitly delivered sessions
A careers curriculum that has contributions and feedback from them, school staff and external employers.
Experience of different employers throughout Year 7 & 8 in variety of formats such as assemblies, talks, project work, careers events and where possible, visits.
Working with our pupils to prepare them for their future and for life after Woodfield.
Staff who are committed, knowledgeable and passionate about helping them develop and understanding what careers are open to them.

Why do we want this?

We want our pupils to know their skills and strengths; know what they are good at and what they find hard.
We want our pupils to work towards independent living and working so they are able to contribute their community and live a fulfilled life.
We want them to be resilient when studying and value the soft-skills that make someone employable.
We want our pupils to learn and make progress so they can thrive and experience success in their future pathways.
We want our pupils to pursue and value their own wellbeing and happiness.

How do we do this?

Woodfield Academy fully embraces the eight Gatsby Benchmarks for Careers Education. Careers education is incorporated into all year groups to stimulate students’ interests in life and the world of work based on the 8 keys areas. For further information on the Gatsby Benchmarks please click here

At Woodfield Academy we also ensure that our Year 8 students are getting the correct guidance about their future pathways in line The Baker Clause. The Baker Clause ensures that all students from Year 8 to 13 receive information and access a range of education and training providers.

We aim to ensure that all students have an equal entitlement to high quality careers education, information, advice and guidance, that raises aspirations; empowers our pupils to plan and be inspired for their own futures; helps them understand the world of work and the personal and academic skills required to be successful within it; helps them to explore a broad range of career options and

actively promotes equality of opportunity and challenges stereotypes.

Impact: What is our expected impact? 

Pupils will have a successful transition into high-school with the foundational knowledge to inform their subject options and future career decisions.
Pupils will have had experience of a wide range of opportunities, interests and options so they are better placed to make informed decisions about their future choices
Pupils will develop the skills needed for them to be employable, whether that is voluntarily or paid
Pupils will know the value of having work and commitments in their lives
Pupils will know that they have a valued and important part to play in the world in which they live and they can and are motivated to contribute to society in a way which best suits their interests and skills.

The main aims of careers provision at Woodfield Academy is to develop the skills, attitudes and abilities of our students to enable them to make effective decisions about their future education, training, employment and life as an adult member of society. We aim to ensure that all students have an equal entitlement to high quality careers education, information, advice and guidance, that:

raises aspirations;
empowers our pupils to plan and be inspired for their own futures;
helps them understand the world of work and the personal and academic skills required to be successful within it;
helps them to explore a broad range of career options;
actively promotes equality of opportunity and challenge stereotypes;
provides for the particular needs and aspirations of pupils, as well as offering a basic entitlement to broad areas of experience;
equips pupils with the skills and knowledge for a fast-changing world;

Careers Part 2

Woodfield Academy is an active member of the Worcestershire Enterprise Adviser Network which supports the development of Worcestershire’s Future Workforce through employer related careers activity. We are fully committed to ensuring that all of our students acquire the skills, knowledge and attitudes to manage their learning and career progression. Careers Lead – Miss Alison Chapman

We are very keen to engage with businesses and employers to help us inform and educate our students. This links directly with Gatsby Benchmark 5 (Encounters with Employers and Employees) and Gatsby Benchmark 6 (Experiences of Workplaces).

We provide many opportunities for businesses to interact with students: careers carousels, skills workshops, presentations etc.
