Rewards and Praise at Woodfield Academy

When a pupil’s behaviour meets or goes above and beyond the expected behaviour standard, staff will recognise it with positive recognition and reward. This provides an opportunity for all staff to reinforce the school’s culture and ethos.

Positive reinforcements and rewards will be applied clearly and fairly to reinforce the routines, expectations and norms of the school’s behaviour culture.

Positive behaviour will be rewarded with:

  • Verbal praise
  • Positive behaviour points recorded on the electronic system
  • Communicating praise to parents/carers via a phone call or written correspondence
  • Certificates, prize ceremonies or special assemblies
  • Positions of responsibility, such as prefect status or being entrusted with a particular decision or project
  • Whole-class or year group rewards, such as a popular activity

BEAM Awards (Bordesley Engagement and Achievement Merits)

Our rewards system is designed to recognise and reinforce the positive behaviours and attitudes we expect from all students, every day. We focus on three key areas: compliance, effort, and the school values.

Lesson Merits – Daily Compliance

  • Students can earn 1 merit per lesson or AM tutor time for:
    • Following classroom routines
    • Meeting expectations for behaviour and engagement
    • Being ready to learn and contributing appropriately
  • The focus is about doing the right thing, consistently.

Wall of Fame – Weekly Subject Effort Awards

  • Each week, subject departments nominate one student per year group who has shown outstanding effort and commitment in their subject.
  • These students are celebrated in assemblies and displayed on our Wall of Fame.
  • 5 merits are awarded to each student chosen.
  • This focuses on learning effort.

Star of the Week – School Values in Tutor Time

  • Each tutor chooses a Star of the Week from their group who has best represented the school values
  • This award recognises students who go above and beyond in how they treat others and contribute to the tutor group and wider school community.
  • Each Star of the Week earns 5 merits.

Half-Termly Celebration Assemblies

At the end of every half term, we bring the school community together to celebrate students who consistently demonstrate effort, positive behaviour, and our shared values.

Each celebration takes place in a Key Stage or Year Group Assembly led by the Headteacher, and we are proud to invite parents to attend and be part of these special moments.

ABC Awards – Attendance, Behaviour, Classrooms

We recognise students who consistently meet expectations in the three key areas that underpin successful school life:

  • Attendance
  • 100% Attenders for the half-term.
    • Students who have not missed a single day all half-term.
  • Excellent Attendance
    • Students with 5 days or fewer of absence (including authorised).
  • 100% Attenders for the half-term
    • Students who have not missed a single day all half-term.
  • Behaviour – BEAM Badges
  • Those who reach key merit milestones are awarded BEAM badges as visible recognition of their achievement.

BEAM badges celebrate effort, not just outcome — reinforcing the daily behaviours we value most.

  • Classroom Effort – Subject Half-Term Awards
  • Each subject nominates one student per year group who has shown outstanding effort, focus, or progress over the half term.
  • These awards reflect students who bring a positive learning attitude to every lesson.

This ensures recognition for learners who quietly and consistently “get it right.”

Woodfield Academy Values Awards

These awards honour the character and values we want every child to develop.

Year Team Leader Awards

Each Year Team Leader selects one student who has exemplified the school’s values through their actions, attitude, and contribution to the school community.

Headteacher’s Award

The Headteacher’s Award recognises a student who consistently serves as a role model in every aspect of school life. This award celebrates those who demonstrate the school’s values through exemplary behaviour, leadership, and commitment to the school community.
